General User Policies & Rules:- Limited Access to SSEL - In order to enter SSEL you must be either an SSEL affiliate with card access or a subject signed up for an ongoing experiment.
- Computer Availability and Priority of Use - Computers in the lab are available for authorized users 24/7. However, whenever there is an experiment in the lab, it will take priority over individual use. All decisions as to the use of the computers are at the discretion of the SSEL Director and the SSEL technical manager.
- Copyright and Licensing Restrictions - The user is responsible for observing all copyright laws. The software and documentation made available in the lab is for use only in the lab and is not to be duplicated for use elsewhere. Duplicating a copyrighted program or documentation is illegal and constitutes an Honor Code violation.
- Liabilities - SSEL makes no guarantees regarding equipment, programs, documentation or other materials in the computer lab. The lab is not responsible for loss of data due to faulty programs or equipment.
- Data Storage - Users should not store their files on the hard drives of the individual workstations in the lab. The workstations are being periodically reformatted for updates and patches without any prior notice. Authorized users may save their data on the H: drive, which is backed up on a nightly basis. Users, logged in as 'expuser', may NOT save their personal settings on individual workstations.
- Reporting Equipment Problems - Report any PC or printer problems, such as paper jams, toner replacement, backed-up print jobs, etc. to Walter Yuan, the lab technical manager. Do not attempt to fix any lab equipment on your own.
- Food, Drink and Tobacco are not allowed in the lab
Individual Account Set-up Guidelines- Applying for an Individual Account - In order to establish an individual account at SSEL, you must be a current graduate student, staff or faculty member of the Division of Humanities and Social Science (HSS). You need to make an appointment to see Walter Yuan to set up your account. A valid Caltech ID is required. Once your account is active, you will be able to access SSEL (Baxter #5) with your ID card.
- Applying for an Experimenter Account - Any HSS affiliated faculty member can request an experimenter account in the SSEL web management system. Graduate students and research staff need to have a faculty sponsor to establish an experimenter account. A tutorial (10 minutes) of the system is mandatory for new experimenters. Please contact Walter Yuan, if you are interested in becoming an experimenter at SSEL.
